This short and sweet Christmas play will come together with just a handful of rehearsals and is perfect for your church or other religious celebration. Filled with lots of laughs, A Christmas De-Light! gently reminds us that the way we spend Christmas should be meaningful. At the beginning of the play, we meet five families, all asking in their own way, ”Why bother going to church on Christmas Eve?” One family goes to be seen by the right crowd; others go — with varying degrees of dread — out of a sense of guilt, duty, or habit. When circumstances delay a truly faithful family, they are left out in the cold because the church is too crowded. They return home, only to be met with more disappointment — the power has gone out. But that doesn’t stop the children who, in the true spirit of Christmas, decide to hold their own “service.” As their quiet, sincere worship ends, Maria, from C.C.’s Power and Light Company, arrives and brightens their world with light again. The discovery of who Maria and C.C. really are is pure Christmas magic — for the cast and the audience.
