But I’m Only Seventeen offers an opportunity to present a dramatic play that is extremely topical and vitally important to high school and even some middle school audiences. This award-winning socio-drama has a number of scenes dealing with current problems facing today’s young people, such as sexually transmitted diseases, date rape, suicide, and distracted driving. Because of the broad number of topics it covers, the play does not need to be presented in its entirety, but rather can be broken down into sections or scenes that are sensitive to the producing group’s particular interests or theme, time constraints, and cast size. Whether produced as select scenes or as a whole, the play is ideal as a discussion starter. The scenes don’t offer or force solutions and are not at all preachy. Instead, this moving drama provides an avenue for groups to discuss critical issues which affect teens’ lives..
