Adapted for readers theatre by the renowned Melvin White and now reimagined for radio, The Wizard of Oz Radio Adventure has all the fun and familiar characters, plus the ease of a radio show — a flexible cast and no need for sets or costumes. Suggested sound effects and early 20th-century public domain music brings out the full potential of this radio play with ample opportunity for creative and challenging voice work.
Told in true storyteller fashion, audience members will hear of Dorothy and Toto’s courageous adventure in a whole new way! This storyline stays true to the original text, reducing the role of the Wicked Witch of the West and focusing more on the Wizard’s deceit and what happens to Dorothy and her faithful friends after they’ve tossed that fateful bucket of water.
Dr. White dedicated his career to educational and children’s theatre, having authored 107 plays and 17 books. Pioneer playwright and editor Jeremy Johnson jumped at the chance to lovingly adapt Dr. White’s adaptation to radio in a way that honors both Dr. White’s storytelling and the Golden Age of Radio that came shortly after this classic story was originally written.
