It’s the 1950s and wealthy Texas cattle magnate Grant Livingston can’t wait to make Laura Ferguson his wife as soon as she returns from dress shopping in NYC. But Laura won’t be coming back. In fact, she’s not even Laura Ferguson, but rather Ashley Johnson, daughter of Arthur and Cynthia Johnson. These New England store owners need inventory, so they’ve devised a scam whereby their daughter gets engaged to a wealthy bachelor, then disappears — with all the wedding gifts — right before the wedding!
Even before Grant realizes his bride is gone for good, the Johnsons have moved on to their next victims, another obscenely rich family and their eligible bachelor son, Austin. The cunning con artists make their move and all goes well... perhaps too well. Ashley falls in love with Austin for real and experiences true remorse over her family’s grifting of rich bachelors. Just as Ashley decides to come clean with her intended and his kind family, Austin’s best man arrives for the nuptials. Much to her chagrin, the best man is the recently jilted Grant, who could expose the Johnsons for the frauds they are. Ideal for high schools and community theatres, money really can’t buy happiness in this lighthearted comedy about the things that truly matter most.
