Here are all the elements of a classic melodrama packed into an easy-to-produce 20 minutes! Poor Ma Hubbard! She and her three fair daughters are left alone to run the Rest in Peace Hotel when Pa is kidnapped by gypsies. As if things weren’t bad enough, villainous banker Simon Snivelheart and his sidekick, Bungles, threaten to foreclose on them if they can’t come up with the mortgage money by six o’clock. Of course, he’s scheming to get the land deed — and daughter Nellie in the bargain — because the treasure map indicates the hotel is sitting over a forgotten goldmine. Luckily, our hero and Nellie’s beau, Heroic Hector, manages to get the mortgage money on time. But dastardly deeds involving a fortune teller and a teddy bear thwart his heroic deed before good finally triumphs over evil. Several small roles allow for a cast size as small as 10 with doubling.
