In this outrageously clever and hilarious “play on words,” a beautiful chanteuse named Trouble Maecker strolls into hard-boiled detective Nick Bullitt’s office and laments that one of her letters has been stolen. But it’s not an old love letter. It’s the letter P, and without it she can’t sing, let alone recite “Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers.” As Trouble explains, “You can imagine my _redicament.” Nick’s investigation leads him to an array of wacky characters, including a wisecracking waitress, a surly receptionist, a wildly incompetent dentist, and the dentist’s hapless patient. In the end, Nick tricks Trouble into saying the word “philodendron,” proving that she had faked the theft in an attempt to defraud her insurance company. The cops haul her away, but it’s not until she’s gone that Nick realizes she has gotten her _ayback... er, payback. The witty wordplay in this delightful film noir spoof will appeal to all ages.
