Tartuffe, the greatest impostor of them all, pretends to be a pious and righteous fellow and has befriended the wealthy but foolish Orgon. Everyone in the Orgon household is appalled at the way Tartuffe has wormed his way into the favor of imprudent Orgon, who is so taken with Tartuffe that he tries to marry his daughter to the scoundrel and even disinherits his son so that Tartuffe can get the family fortune. But Orgon’s wife and a saucy servant girl have a plan that will trap the rascal and expose him for the phony that he is.
The result is a series of hilarious surprises and reversals and a merry resolution that have kept audiences in hysterics for three centuries.
