In a room on Ellis Island in 1906, seven newly-arrived immigrants have been singled out by the authorities and told to wait. These detainees from Italy, Ireland, Norway and Russia are fearful of being rejected and sent back to Europe. As they wait, the immigrants begin to build a kinship with each other. Most in the group are declared healthy enough to enter America, but one is in for a bittersweet surprise. The lucky immigrants exit to be processed, joyous at the prospect of a bright future in America and bringing to life the hopes and dreams of the millions of Europeans who emigrated to America at the turn of the century. This very human, touching drama serves as valuable history lesson for young and old alike. An opportunity to use accents makes this 30-minute play ideal for competitions.
