This faithful adaptation of the American classic retains the original plot, theme and characters, while modifying the language and developing the humor and irony sometimes missed by students in an academic reading. High school students in particular will find that the dramatization cuts through the heavy-handed narrative of a past era to the timeless heart of the characters and their shared dilemma. Crafted by a teacher and long-time student of drama, this script has proved an effective Readers’ Theater piece, especially for in-class readings augmenting a unit on the novel. Mature theater groups will find the script a fluid, fast moving and emotionally rich theatrical project. There are many good scenes for both major and supporting characters. Two townsmen and three village gossips both narrate and take part in the action as the vengeful Chillingworth pursues the guilt-ridden Dimmesdale, while Hester is torn between her love for one man and her duty to the other. An epilogue, set in Hawthorne’s time, concludes the tragic tale on a positive note.
