As another Red Ribbon Week approaches, student council member Amalie wants more than just slogans, posters, and spirit days to show her commitment to a healthy, drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle. For Amalie, it’s personal. Her father was killed by a drunk driver several years earlier. She’s wants to make this year’s event even more meaningful by telling her story, and she hopes other students will also share how drug and alcohol addiction has impacted their lives.
Another student, Jake, knows he should participate because he wrestles with the consequences of his mother’s drinking years ago. But he doesn’t want to share because he hides an even deeper secret: his mother was the drunk driver who killed Amelia’s dad. Eventually, Jake realizes he can’t hide the truth from Amelia, and now the two friends must come to grips with a horrible reality they can never escape.
This short, dramatic one-act from AATE award-winner Kendra Thomas sends a strong message appropriate any time of year about the dangers of drinking and substance abuse. Easy-to-stage, this is a powerful one-act either for competition or as a conversation-starter for any group exploring the unintended consequences of personal choices.
