Two young men have been given political jobs as "Lifeguards" on a public beach. They spend their days "selling off" their various items of equipment to tourists for souvenirs; everything from whistles to rubber life rafts. The spoils are divided with their political benefactor. A problem arises when two girls discover that neither young man can swim, nor are they in any way qualified for their jobs. When the girls threaten to complain, they are informed that there is no way they can cut through the system to protest a political appointment. The tremendous impact of this play lies in the simple, penetrating comment it makes on today’s political system. The story is devastatingly funny, yet brutally frank. It is certainly worth viewing when searching for a quality contest piece, as well.
