One of the best-known plays in world literature, Hamlet is a philosophical study of life and death, laced with some of the most recognized of Shakespeare’s soliloquies including, Hamlet’s "To be or not to be..." Home for his father’s funeral, Hamlet learns that his father’s brother, Claudius, has taken over the kingship of Denmark by marrying the queen, his mother. When his late father’s ghost appears before him to tell how he was murdered in cold blood by Claudius, Hamlet develops a severe melancholy and sets out to avenge his father’s death. Hamlet requests that a troupe of players performs a play representing the crime of his uncle, whose violent reaction on seeing the play reveals his guilty conscience-exactly what Hamlet intended.
Keith Nielsen’s adaptation of this classic tragedy will open the doors for young people to both reading and performing Shakespeare. Somewhat simplified yet still retaining all the critical elements of the original, this is the perfect introduction for students not yet ready to tackle Shakespeare’s actual text.
