The emperor of Thyswood is looking for a new suit of clothes, but you probably already knew that. What you didn’t know is that the emperor and empress are feuding with the king and queen of nearby Thatwood. When Princess Jill and Prince Jack disappear in the Murky Mountains, their respective parents hire an unlikely quartet of detectives — Nancy Clue, Mike Screwdriver, Miss Maple and Joe Saturday — to find the children. After all, in the pass between Thyswood and Thatwood grows a giant beanstalk, and if the giant who lives at the top of the beanstalk doesn’t get you, the ogre who lives at the bottom will (unless the two of them happen to be playing chess, which they do a lot). In this delightful lark through fairy-tale land, all the strands of the story are wittily woven together, right up until the hilarious moment when the emperor finally finds the perfect suit, Jack falls in love with Jill, the children start a rock band, and the two feuding countries are united as Wychwood-under-Ooze. The evenly divided parts make this a perfect ensemble piece for any age.
