The world of fine art comes to life in this teen drama that is a collection of small, intertwined, art-inspired scenes and poignant, revealing flashbacks.
Ms. Diaz’s art appreciation class is visiting a museum where some of the world’s greatest paintings are being exhibited. To be certain her students make the most of the opportunity, she assigns them each to find one painting that moves or inspires them.
This is no easy assignment since the students are as diverse as the art. Abby is forced to confront cyber-bullying by a jealous classmate bent on destroying her reputation. Grace can’t decide what to do with her life and alters her personality in a vain attempt to be someone she isn’t. Layla is overwhelmed by her schedule and her parents’ ambitions for her, and her best friend Jasmine gets weary of lending support and offering advice. Sierra struggles with an eating disorder, made worse by her friend Erin simplifying the matter without understanding the cause. Happy-go-lucky Drew has a great time — until his cash goes missing, while his friend Luis is suddenly confronted with a family crisis. And refugee Ahmed tries to find his footing in a new country with classmates who don’t know what he’s been through.
Backstories are fleshed out in brief flashbacks as each student finds the piece of art which most speaks to them. And even Ms. Diaz must confront her own past when a particular painting gives her pause. Creatively using projections of the famous works of art can enhance this production and make it truly memorable and one-of-a-kind.
