Here is an excellent instructional guide to learn the basics of blocking a scene.  Emphasizing script analysis, development of a floorplan, and collaboration with actors, the DVD focuses on two students as they begin their very first directing project.  As they explore essential and practical methods, they include important tips to assist in approaching first directing assignments with confidence and success.  This video is intended to supplement classroom instruction and provide students with a handy souce of fundamental knowledge.  The hour and a half long video includes four parts:

PART ONE:  Blocking and Scene Analysis
Important attributes of being a good director are described along with an emphasis on working in detail, stage terms, and the purpose of blocking.

PART TWO:  Making a Groundplan
Discussion addresses key tips to preparing an effective groundplan.

PART THREE:  Blocking Homework or Pre-Blocking
Emphasis is on the importance of pre-blocking information and how it helps develop a more successful rehearsal.

PART FOUR:  Working with Actors
A short scene is shown in three stages of rehearsal.  Shot live, these rehearsal are extremely valuable to the viewer to reinforce the criteria previously discussed, provide a basis for in-class critiques of the scene, and give the viewer a sense of confidence in their own scenes.
