Gabrielle is blind, but has tremendous insight. Troy can physically see, but doesn’t notice much. When Troy first approaches Gabriella at the park and tells her she’s beautiful, he’s taken aback that she rebuffs his compliment. He’s even more surprised when he realizes that the young woman is blind, yet still appreciates beauty all around her. How could she comprehend beauty if she’s always been blind? Their conversation becomes a beautiful lesson, literally, for Troy. Gabrielle encourages him to close his eyes and use all his senses to experience other types of beauty. The pair also discovers a shared appreciation for the lyrical beauty of Shakespeare’s words and the imagery he paints with them. By the end of their encounter, it is Gabrielle who has helped Troy learn to see more clearly. In doing so, he realizes that his new friend is truly beautiful — both inside and out.
