This modern language version of one of Shakespeare’s most heartwarming and funny plays introduces students to the sheer fun of performing his comedies.  It holds closely to the original storyline, yet seeing the dialogue written in today’s language gives young actors an understanding of the intention behind the line, which immediately enhances their ability to act the part and enjoy the play.

With her father recently banished by her uncle, Rosalind has little choice but to flee with her cousin Celia (the usurper’s daughter) to the Forest of Arden, where the young women assume new identities.  Rosalind becomes a young man named Ganymede and her cousin adopts the personality of Aliena.  It’s not long after the pair go incognito that Rosalind learns of sweet Orlando’s infatuation for her.  Her feelings are mutual, but to express as much would blow her cover!  Instead, “Ganymede” tutors young Orlando in romance and along the way, the whole kingdom learns a thing or two about true love and forgiveness. 

Streamlined sets and staging add to the simple charm of this comedy adaptation that reminds us that “all the world’s a stage” and we’re merely the players.
