When word got out in 1848 that gold was discovered in California, some 300,000 hopeful prospectors traveled there from across the United States and other countries. Since most descended upon California in the year 1849, these prospectors were called “49ers.”
Bertha runs a boarding house for 49ers. Some, like British prospector Jasper Garrick, have found only disappointment. To make matters worse, Jasper can’t even find any tea in all of San Francisco! Other prospectors, however, like lodger Rufus Logan, have struck gold... literally! In fact, he’s so well off that he generously gives his bag of tea to Jasper and his bag of tobacco to Elsie, a local saloon girl. How unfortunate for Rufus that his bag of gold dust looks just like his bags of tea and tobacco! Like watching a shell game, your audience will hoot ‘n’ holler to discover who finally ends up with the bag of gold in this fast-paced clever comedy!
