Six girls decide to spend the night in an old barn on the slopes of Gallows Hill in Salem, Massachusetts, the site where nineteen condemned ’witches’ were hanged in the Seventeenth Century.  One of the girls, Nancy, is a direct descendant of the judge who ordered the executions.  Things start out as a lark, but when the spirits of the witches rise from the swirling mist things take a bizarre turn.  To wreak their long-delayed revenge, the witches enter the bodies of the unsuspecting girls and possess them.  A reenactment of a witch trial then proceeds.  Only Nancy understands that something is violently, frighteningly, wrong.  She is condemned to hang and a noose is produced.  But Nancy’s defense, one that travels back in time, not only saves her life, but frees the tormented spirits of the dead ’witches.’ Only when the nightmare is over and Nancy persuades the girls to leave the barn, does she understand why she was summoned to the unholy spot.  An unusual play with a contemporary message, real enough to make the flesh tingle, and behind everything lurking the Devil himself.  Simple to stage with excellent acting roles, since the actresses must portray two personalities, its compact playing time makes this an ideal contest vehicle.
