As a matter of survival during the Great Depression, Lori married John Jacobson, a railroad worker 25 years older than her. He was a friendly man who loved Lori, though those feelings were not mutual. Tragically, John lost all his hearing as the result of a railroad accident, leaving the once vivacious Lori more lonely, isolated, and poor than she ever imagined she would be.
Lori falls in love with Kurt, a thoughtful, young railroad engineer who regularly stops by their secluded country cabin to play chess with her husband. While Kurt plays chess with the unhearing John, the lovers plot to run away together. In the final dramatic moments as a threatening wildfire grows nearer, their greed and yearnings destroy them all.
