The Rainbow Fish Musical
The Rainbow Fish is finally here! After months of anticipation and preparation, Pioneer Drama Service is proud to publish The Rainbow Fish Musical. This is the first time ever that a musical version of this beloved and best-selling children’s book has been available for amateur production!
The Rainbow Fish Musical invites endless creativity in staging and costuming. Packed with endearing characters, high energy, and a timeless message about friendship and sharing, this colorful, picturesque production will quickly become one of your all-time favorites! We love that this fantastic new musical has broad appeal to a wide variety of ages. It’s far more than just a simple children’s musical!
We have TWO VERSIONS of The Rainbow Fish Musical available for production, so please read on to order the one best-suited for your needs.
The small-cast version has a running time of 60 minutes and is written for a cast of 5 to 9 actors. Developed by the talented Austin Zumbro for the Bay Area Children’s Theatre, this musical charmed over 5,000 young audience members in its premiere production. Ideal for touring or for TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) productions, this show was written specifically for high schools, colleges, and children’s and community theatres to perform for children and their families.
The large-cast version is essentially the same show, so it also has a running time of 60 minutes, but it is expanded to have a cast of 15 to 30 (or more!) actors. The sophistication of the songs makes it much more than a typical children’s show, yet elementary and middle school performers will appreciate that the music has been somewhat simplified from the small-cast version, with slightly slower tempos and narrower vocal ranges to help singers sound their best. Almost all the songs have plenty of room for large choruses, making it a fun show even with a huge cast!
If you have somewhere in between 9 and 15 actors, it certainly is possible to create a hybrid version of these two scripts. If you are working with younger actors, we strongly suggest you order the scripts and music for the large-cast version, then also get one script of the other version to see how to reduce the cast size. (A minimum purchase of 15 scripts will still be required for the large-cast version, but no doubt you’ll put those extra scripts to good use!) If you have older, more experienced actors, you might want the more challenging music in the small-cast version. In this case, remember to get one script of the other version for ideas on how to expand the cast size.
No matter which version you choose, your audiences will be thrilled to see the magical The Rainbow Fish Musical swim into your theatre!
