Mom’s Mushy Meatballs

The attached monologues below about “Mom’s mushy meatballs” seem particularly timely right now, when so many of us are bored of home-cooked meals and longing to visit our favorite restaurant.  These excerpts from Ups and Downs are also topical — after all, how many of us have been spending a lot more time in the kitchen with our kiddos (alas, with mixed results)?

The lesson here is important:  two characters can have a significantly different perspective about the same event.  And the humor is in hearing the son tell his side of the story with such shock and dismay, while his mother sees their time together as a bonding experience and a promising vision of her son’s future success.

Challenge your young actors to try out both parts!  Have them think of it as a debate, and see how well they can sell each perspective!

Besides 30 sets of paired monologues from different perspectives, like these, Ups and Downs also has 20 monologues with two different suggested scenarios.

Teachers, keep encouraging your students to sign up for our newsletter here.  For more tips on how to share these monologues with students or guidelines about sharing monologue performances with us, see our last Monologue Mania newsletter.

We’re still waiting to see your videos, though we love the feedback we’ve been getting about Monologue Mania! Be sure to tell us more about how you’re using these monologues in your own virtual and distance learning plans.

We’ll continue to offer pairs of monologues multiple times a week, in addition to other distance learning lesson ideas, announcements of new releases (yes, there will ALWAYS be new plays!), new contest announcements, and more!

Stay well, and stay tuned for more!
