Empowering Kids Through Theatre

By Klarissa McAuley, KRCG-TV

Check out this inspiring article about Pioneer playwrights Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus.  They truly live our motto of Touching Lives Through Theatre!

A group of Jefferson City teens spent three weeks working with a former Disney writer as a part of the annual Showdown Academy.  Cindy Marcus has been coming to Missouri's capital city for the past 12 years to put on this acting camp.

Marcus, her husband Flip Kobler, and their family friend Dennis Poore work together to teach the teens acting skills, and by the end of the three weeks, they have a full stage production prepared.

However, more than the stage skills, the kids said they leave each time with renewed confidence.

“It started as a theater camp and then it became more and more about empowering kids through theater and giving them an outlet,” Marcus said.

Marcus said teen years are a very tough time for everyone, and the theater is a place where kids can express themselves safely without judgment.

“To see these kids grow and change and become more confident and become the people that they want to be, that's a big thing for me,” Kobler said.  “We're here to give you the tools to go after your dream, whatever your dream is.  Whether you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a dental hygienist, a senator, it doesn't matter.  The skills you'l learn here will apply to that life but we want to give them the confidence to know, that they are extraordinary.”
