Author Profile: Gary Abbott
Gary William Abbott graduated from Emerson College, Boston, in 1966. At Emerson he studied playwriting under Walter Littlefield, for whose seminar class he produced two only slightly pretentious one-acts, and a full length comedy about college and free speech, only slightly reminiscent of the author’s then favorite American comedy, Thurber and Nugent’s The Male Animal.
The author wrote his first plays as brief sketches for radio in his high school broadcasting club. He recalls warmly rehearsing the first of these – a take-off on the 50s adult TV westerns – when the tickertape at the local radio station spit out the news that the Russians had successfully launched Sputnik, the first orbiting satellite.
Mr. Abbott has been an actor/stage manager, a teacher, an entrepreneur, a technical editor, and a teacher again. He is now retired from all of that and lives in genteel poverty on the coast of Maine.
