Author Profile: George Wingerter
George Wingerter's education was primarily involved in languages (Spanish, German, Russian and Hebrew), and his literary interests extended from the pastoral poetry of Virgil and Garcilaso to 20th Century Latin-American absurdism.
Theatre was one of his interests as well, and he appeared in productions of Street Scene, Rumpelstiltskin, Inherit the Wind, Lope's La Dama Boba and The Cherry Orchard. He also served as technical advisor for these and other productions.
The Ransom of Red Chief, co-authored with Pam Nagle, was initially performed in San Antonio and, available through Pioneer Drama Service, is produced frequently around the country.
Wingerter taught at Indiana University, was on the faculty of Trinity University, and at the time of his death in 1990 was on the faculty of Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
A George Wingerter Memorial Scholarship has been established in his name.
