Jacalyn Kalin

Jacalyn Kalin's interest in playwriting grew out of her strong desire to introduce audiences to historical women, their actions and their achievements.  One of her missions has been to demonstrate the less celebrated actions by courageous women as a way of encouraging people, especially females, to see that they can effect change.  A play provides the perfect vehicle to give women a voice.

Step Up to the Plate, her first play, allowed her to pursue her love of historical research to unearth unheralded women and herald them.  She has highlighted women's roles in other plays, including Move Over, Buster, and Hickory, Dickory, Dock! This last one was in a collection of readings titled “The Women of the Stockyards” that was presented in Chicago in 2010 and sponsored by the Stockyards Theatre Project.

Giving a voice to women became of interest to Ms. Kalin when she taught high school history in the 1990's.  While she has changed teaching careers, she has never lost her desire and passion to publicize women and their remarkable actions.

She lives in Washington, D.C.  with her husband, Ken Cooper, an enthusiastic supporter of her efforts to get women out of the shadows of history.
