Playwrights, Composers, Lyricists and Authors

Michael Hulett (Email me!)

Michael Hulett
A native of New York City, Michael Hulett graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and received his master’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  As a professional playwright, lyricist and composer, he has twice won first prize in national playwriting competitions — for his musical version of The Wind in the Willows (National Children's Theater Playwriting Award), which was also a Children's Theatre Association of America Distinguished Play of the Year Finalist, and for his drama Alexander(Theater Memphis National Playwriting Competition).

Off-Broadway, his book and lyrics for the musical Basin Street, with music by jazz legend Turk Murphy, garnered praise from The New York Times, as did his musical version of A Christmas Carol.  He contributed the book for three musicals optioned for Broadway (Castles, In The Mood and the revival of Bubbling Brown Sugar), as well as Unforgettable, the musical biography of Nat King Cole authorized by the Cole estate, and Empress of the Blues, a musical written for Jennifer Holliday based on the life of Bessie Smith.

In regional theaters, his works have been performed at the Kennedy Center (Junk), Denver Center Theater Company (Androcles and the Lion), Provincetown Playhouse (Kingdom Come), and the Aspen Playwright’s Festival (Entwined).

Currently, Michael is the Artistic Director of Musical Artists Theatre in Baltimore where his original musicals King of the Eastern Shore and Songs for My Daughter premiered.  Other productions include the book and lyrics for Around The World In 80 Days, Dracula, Dreamland and Rags to Riches (set to the music of Scott Joplin).  His lyrics have been released on three commercial recordings and have been heard in Carnegie Hall.  Michael is a long-standing member of the Dramatists Guild.
