At the beginning of the play, we meet five families, all asking in their own way, why bother going to church on Christmas Eve? One family goes to be seen by the right crowd; others go — with varying degrees of dread — out of a sense of guilt, duty or habit. When circumstances delay a truly faithful family, they are left out in the cold because the church is too crowded. They return home, only to be met with more disappointment — the power has gone out.
